BENNY GOODMAN - THE FAMOUS 1938 CARNEGIE HALL JAZZ CONCERT, VOL. 1
Revisit one of the most culturally seismic milestones in American music history with this 1970s US vinyl reissue of Benny Goodman’s The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert, Vol. 1. Originally captured live during the swing era's definitive pinnacle, this landmark performance marked the very first time jazz was granted entry into New York's prestigious premier classical hall. Fronted by the peerless "King of Swing" on clarinet, the 7-track layout captures an immaculate, high-energy masterclass. Goodman’s legendary orchestra interlocks with generation-defining icons, rocketing through electric big band anthems like "Don't Be That Way" and a massive, historically integrated jam session on Count Basie’s "One O'Clock Jump". Carrying the legacy CL 814 mono catalog prefix from the 1956 catalog rollout, it is housed on highly durable, later-generation wax featuring the signature "1-Eye" center label configuration—delivering a beautifully balanced, clean, and warm analog archive of a legendary night.
Circa 1970s US repress release by Columbia, catalog # CL 814. Columbia "1-Eye" labels that were used 1970s into the 1990s but no barcode on back so this probably predates the 1980s when barcodes became widely used. Reissue of original 1956 pressing in mono, manufactured at Terre Haute plant.
Sleeve grades VG+. Fantastic condition on this cover - super clean with sharp corners, no real edgewear. Just a couple very light spots of wear on front, not apparent without looking closely - some would call it NM - but it's obviously used when looking closer and just a strong VG+.
Vinyl grades VG+. Plays through with no issues. There's some crackle but I think it's the original recording sound quality (from 1938) and not the disc. Visually the disc is pretty clean with a handful of light surface marks/hairlines on each side.
