JULIAN COPE - WORLD SHUT YOUR MOUTH

A fascinating piece of 1980s music marketing, the promo cassette for "World Shut Your Mouth" (1986) is a testament to the era of the "Imaginary Album." Interestingly, while Julian Cope’s 1984 debut solo album was titled World Shut Your Mouth, the hit song of the same name didn't appear until his 1987 album Saint Julian. This 1986 promo was designed to bridge that gap, re-introducing Cope as a bona fide pop star.

This specific "Island World Service" Far East promo (Cat: CIS 290) is highly prized for its unique content. Unlike the standard single, the cassette often features a specialized 8-minute interview with Cope (conducted by Sachiko Naganuma), where he discusses his transition from the "acid-casualty" days of The Teardrop Explodes to his newfound pop sensibility. Musically, it’s a powerhouse, featuring the Ed Stasium-produced title track alongside gritty, "Double DeHarrison" produced B-sides like the Pere Ubu cover "Non-Alignment Pact" and the 13th Floor Elevators' "I’ve Got Levitation."

1986 UK import/release by Island Records, catalog # CIS290.  Promotional cassette, made and printed in Great Britain; including five (5) tracks, interview, biographies, photos.  Does not include original sticker insert.
