KILLING JOKE - OUTSIDE THE GATE

Perhaps the most controversial chapter in the band’s history, Outside the Gate (1988) captures Killing Joke at a crossroads where ancient mysticism met the digital age. Originally intended as a Jaz Coleman solo project, the album evolved into a dense, synth-heavy "orchestral" experiment that utilized Gematria—an ancient numerical system—to dictate its complex arrangements. While it famously baffled the press upon release, the record remains a fascinating "lost" artifact of gothic synth-pop, trading Geordie Walker’s signature jagged riffs for a lush, apocalyptic wall of sound. From the theatrical, Reagan-era satire of "America" to the soaring, cinematic sorrow of "My Love of This Land," this collection serves as the final, shimmering end to the band’s 1980s evolution before their rebirth into industrial monsters.

1988 UK import/first release by EG, catalog # EG MC 73.  Cassette contains full-length versions of Tiahuanaco and Outside The Gate without the edits on the standard vinyl release.
