THE SOFT BOYS - RADAR DEMOS
A fascinating glimpse into the "what if" history of post-punk, The Radar Demos captures The Soft Boys at a critical crossroads in 1978. Recorded at Spaceward Studios, these tracks were intended to secure a long-term deal with Radar Records (then home to Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe). While the label ultimately passed—famously finding the band "too idiosyncratic"—the sessions produced some of the most vibrant and focused recordings of the group's early career. Featuring the definitive lineup of Hitchcock, Rew, Seligman, and Windsor, the demos include early, high-energy versions of "The Face of Lamb" and "The Man with the Lightbulb Head." These recordings bridge the gap between the raw amateurism of their first EPs and the sophisticated psych-pop of Underwater Moonlight, showcasing a band possessed by a frantic, melodic brilliance that was years ahead of its time.
